How to calm your fearful lizard brain and live life to the fullest
How to calm your fearful lizard brain and live life to the fullestHow to calm your fearful lizard brain and live life to the fullestHeather Hansenis an acclaimed trial lawyer, keynotlagee speaker, andNext Big Idea Club member whose latest book isThe Elegant Warrior How to Win Lifes Trials Without Losing Yourself. Heather recently sat down with Next Big Idea Club Marketing DirectorMarquina Iliev-Pisellito discuss why fear is so persuasive, and what it means to become a truly elegant warrior. This conversation has been edited and condensed. To listen to the full version, click the link here.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreMarquinaHow did you come about writingThe Elegant Warrior?HeatherI defend doctors in medical malpractice cases, and I was having a difficult time standing up for myself, setting boundaries, and using my voice in my real life. But I was so good at it in the courtro om, so I realized that if I used the tools from the courtroom in real life, it would be a whole lot easier. Once that clicked for me, I felt that it would be of service if I shared it with other people.MarquinaThe book follows your career trajectory, and I like how instead of Fake it til you make it, you say, Show it til you grow it. Youre the embodiment of that.HeatherSo often we hear Fake it til you make it. And I know from counseling clients on how to testify that if theyre being fake, the jury knows it immediately. Then youve lost credibility, and youve lost your case. But if you can find that little piece inside of you that you aspire to be- whether its confidence, or kindness, or happiness when youre feeling blue, or the ability to speak in front of a crowd- when you find that little piece and you show it, it does tend to feed off the oxygen you give it, and then it is allowed to grow.MarquinaCould you talk about what you mean when you say that we are the elegant warrior in our lives?HeatherThe word elegance comes from a Latin root that means to choose. I think that we choose our elegance, and the definition is a little bit different for everyone. For me, its the ability to be true to yourself, both who you are now and who you feel destined to be- and to do that, no matter what youre facing. The word elegance comes from a Latin root that means to choose. As a trial lawyer, I know that trials get very heated. And during times of trial, its tempting to be all warrior and lose the elegance, or go for elegance and not fight the war. Finding that balance is a constant struggle for me, but if I can stay true to who I am, then I know that I can look myself in the mirror at the end of a trial, no matter whether I win or lose the case.MarquinaYou also talk about how you respect the other council, even though you dont agree, and theyre quite irritating at times.HeatherYeah, that is so important to me- and not just the other council, but also the other party, because we all have different versions of a story. Studies show that within minutes of being told a story, you and I will have different versions of that story. So at trial, I feel that I can argue with their truth without taking their dignity. When I cross-examine someone, I might want the jury to think that their version of the story is not the correct one, but I dont have to disrespect them, or make them look bad, or make them feel bad. I work really hard not to do that.Sometimes the party themselves will realize, Oh, maybe I was wrong. But most of the time, its up to the jury. Its such a good lesson to binnensee that I have a story, opposing council has a different story, and ultimately the jury chooses whats true. It shows thatthe stories we tell ourselves- whether its in your own head or in your relationships- are not always true. Theres often a different perspective to look at, and thats been really helpful when Im feeling down, or frustrated, or like a failure. Theres always a diffe rent version of the story that you can tell yourself.MarquinaYou have three chapters on objections learning to object, overcoming objections, and when we should stop looking for objections. You focus on that last one the most- is there a reason behind that?HeatherYeah, because its such a big part of life, especially for women. We women are really good at advocating for others in our lives, but not so good at advocating for ourselves. Learning that we can object without getting permission, and not looking for validation, but just because were uncomfortable with something, is imperative.Learning that we can object without getting permission, and not looking for validation, but just because were uncomfortable with something, is imperative.Sometimes other people are going to say, Youre too young, youre too old, youre too female, youre too black, youre too anything. And then theres the most damaging of all- your own inner objections that say, Youre not smart enough, youre not old enough, youre not experienced enough. Those are the things that hold us back the most.Dont spend your life looking for objections. Ive been on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN, so I see both sides of political arguments, and I think that were often looking for reasons to be offended. If youre looking for objections, youre going to find them- but if you do it every chance you get, you might miss out on some fun, and some laughter, and some connection. So its about finding that balance between setting your boundaries and knowing when you need to object.MarquinaAbsolutely. Theres a chapter about the curse of knowledge. Could you tell me what that means?HeatherI read about a Stanford study where participants tapped a tune with a pencil, and saw whether or not a listener could guess what the tune was. fruchtwein of the time, they cant- but the person tapping, who knows the song, gets frustrated because the listener doesnt know it. The person whos tapping has the curse of knowledge- they know the song so wel l that its hard to remember what its like not to know it.I have defended hospital doctors for 20 years, so Ive seen firsthand how doctors have the curse of knowledge. They talk about vascular doctors instead of blood doctors, or they talk about total knee arthroplasty instead of a total knee replacement- that curse of knowledge really gets in the way of communication. The best way to overcome the curse of knowledge is to ask questions. And we all have it. We have it about our own thoughts and our own bodies- we just assume that other people know things. I would do that all the time with my boyfriend- you assume that he knows youve had a bad day, or that you want a certain gift. But theres a study showing that trial lawyers need to say things seven times in seven ways before the jury really gets it. And its true in your personal life too- when your boyfriend or husband is not getting it, youve just got to say it again in a different way.The best way to overcome the curse of knowledge i s to ask questions. I dont get to ask my jury, Is this making sense to you? Do you understand this? Do you have questions? But in real life, you do get to do that.MarquinaOne of the last chapters is about managing your lizard brain. Can you talk about that a bit?HeatherIts fascinating- when I was a younger attorney, a book came out for attorneys who sue, and its about how you should get the jurors thinking about their own survival. Whether its a dangerous product or a dangerous doctor, you want the jury to think, Oh my gosh, I have to protect myself and my family from this thing Thats feeding the lizard brain. There are some people that believe theres a part of our brain at the brain stem thats concerned with what they call the three Fs food, fear, and reproduction (the bad F word). And thats the part of the brain that needs to be put to rest- youve got to tell it that its safe. Its sort of like how inBig Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert talks about how if her fear was in the car with her, it wouldnt be allowed to drive the car. It wouldnt be allowed to give the directions, it wouldnt even be allowed to control the radio. But its still allowed in the car- it just has to sit in the back seat.Thats how I think about the lizard brain- let it sit out in the sun. Once it knows that its safe, you can go on to creativity and love and connection and laughter and joy and all of the things that were meant to be doing. This article originally appeared on Heleo. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Write a Cover Letter A Road Map
How to Write a Cover Letter A Road MapHow to Write a Cover Letter A Road Map50Picture It. Youre a recruiter with numerous open jobs and dozens or even hundreds of job seekers that applied to each position. Someone who knows how to successfully write a cover letter will stand out. Indeed, a well-written cover letter can give you a deeper glimpse into each candidate. Switch perspectives. Now you are a job seeker, convinced that you should write a cover letter though stifled by the incessant blinking cursor that mocks you from that leer document.Heres aroad map to help you successfully write acover letterKeep In MindCover letter writing is not an exact science, though therbeie are commonly agreed upon best practices for the majority of job scenarios. Remember to include your best judgment in the process. You should never have a generic cover letter that you submit for any job.Use common sense and imagine the first impression that your cover letter creates. For example, if it is too long, a recruiter may feel it will be a chore to read.Do not just summarize your resume in your cover letter.Generally, always send a cover letter with your resume, even when not requested. It is far better to submit a cover letter that is never opened than to skip this step and get skipped for an interview.FormatUse business letter format and include your basic contact information, the date the letter is written, and the contact information for the addressee. Generally use this format whether submitting your letter in person or online as an attachment or in a form.Use simple font and black text. Match the font to your resume, and choose something like Arial, Times New Roman, or other simple fonts.Always try to get an actual personenname to which you can address the letter. To get this name, learn through your networking, look in the job description or in the Careers section of the company website, or when in doubt, call the company and ask if you may inquire as to the person who should receive your materials unless the description requests no phone calls. If all else fails, use Dear Sir/Madam.Think of your letter in terms of three or four paragraphs and no more than one page. Less is often more.Use a professional closing such as Sincerely, Best Regards, etc.Sign and print your name for paper documents, and if you do not have the technology available to include your signature on an online document, you can simply print your name in closing.Cover Letter Road MapHead out Im excited about you.In your opening statement, let the reader know why you wrote the letter. For example, Per my conversation with X connection, I am excited to submit my candidacy for the X position in X company. In one or two sentences, describe specifically what attracts you to the position and the company. If there is no position description, do the best you can to tailor your letter as much as possible. It is too generic to say, I align myself with your business philosophy. Let the reader know you understand who they are and the unique value of the open position. Bonus Note a key positive piece of news recently released about the company. You want them to think, Wow, he/she gets usDynamically connect these points about the company to a highlight in your accomplishments that will intrigue the reader to read on.Continue on Heres why you should be excited about me.In a deeper analysis than can be deduced from your resume, highlight two to three examples from the experiences on your resume that showcase your relevant talents, skills, and accomplishments.Make sure you connect these experiences to the needs of the position and relate them to your points in the first short paragraph when possible.Reach your destination Lets get together.Thank the reader for his/her time and consideration.Indicate your anticipation of the next steps of the process. For example, I look forward to further discussing the ways in which my skills can contribute to the needs of your team.State the be st ways to contact you by noting your main email address and phone number. How To SubmitIf using email or an online form, submit your cover letter as an attachment rather than in the body of a message. Emails get lost quickly, and attachments get filed and shared easily. This also gives you another opportunity to showcase your professional communication skills in the actual message.Do not name your document simply cover letter. Include your name and cover letter. At the end of the day, dont let your fear of writing a perfect cover letter keep you from creating one or submitting your materials in a timely and competitive fashion You can do itTodays guest post comes from Christy Robb. Why Employers Offer Variable Pay to Retain Employees
Why Employers Offer Variable Pay to Retain EmployeesWhy Employers Offer Variable Pay to Retain EmployeesVariable pay is employee compensation that changes as compared to the employee salary which is paid in equal, and expected, proportions throughout the year. Variable pay is used generally to recognize and reward employee contribution toward company productivity, profitability, teamwork, safety, quality, or some other metric deemed important by senior leaders. The employee who is awarded platzhalter compensation has gone above and beyond his or her job description to contribute to the organizations success. Variable pay is awarded in a variety of formats including profit sharing, bonuses, holiday bonus, deferred compensation, cash, and goods and services such as a company-paid trip or a Thanksgiving turkey. Why Employers Must Offer Employees Variable Pay and Benefits Variable pay is an expected employee benefit if you are going to excite and retain employees. They want the oppor tunity to earnvariable compensation to bolster their basic salary. And, todays employees are also looking for mora than just a basic salary and benefits package when they decide to come on board and work for an employer. It is no longer enough for a company- even a global company- to offer the same generic benefits to every person they hire. Employees now expect comprehensive benefits packages that are tailored to their own personal needs- not just to broadly defined demographic needs. However, personalizing benefits packages departures with employers truly understanding what their employeesmost value and need. In other words, benefits are only as valuable as each employee views them. As such, the greater the flexibility andvariety of the benefits program, the more likely all of your employees are to feel appreciated. Employer Costs in Pay and Variable Pay According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC), a product of the National Comp ensation Survey, measures employer costs for wages, salaries, and employee benefits for nonfarm private and state and local government workers. Supplemental pay benefit costs for private sector employees in December 2016 averaged $1.15 per hour worked or 3.5 percent of total compensation. Supplemental pay includes employer costs for employee overtime and premium pay, shift differentials, and nonproduction bonuses. In December 2016, the largest component of supplemental pay costs for private industry employers were nonproduction bonuses, averaging 83 cents per hour worked or 2.5 percent of total compensation. Nonproduction bonuses are given at the discretion of the employer and are not tied to a production formula. Common nonproduction bonuses include end-of-year and holiday bonuses, referral bonuses, and cash profit sharing. A Critical Step Is Explaining Employee Variable Benefits Employers must present both the intrinsic and extrinsic value of the benefits they offer in an easy -to-read and understandable format to employees. Conveying benefits packages in laymans terms is not an easy task. Efficiently relaying this information is a time-consuming- but critical- task. From health insurance to retirement plans to variable compensation, one company may offer many types of benefits for employees. Some of these benefits can confuse employees. (Most everyone has wondered how much to contribute to a 401(k) or what is a reasonable deductible.) Make sure your system gives employees access to a resource to ask questions in real-time about which plan makes the most sense for them or their families. Employers should also offer an explanation as to why they offer certain benefits upfront. For example, a younger employee may not see the point in life insurance and view it as a wasted benefit. But if the employer provides information on how many employees are near retirement and place great value on having life insurance, those younger employees will likely be more rece ptive. All employees see the benefit of variable compensation, but employers need to be very clear about how an employee can earn it, how much they are paying, and who is eligible to receive it. If the employer communicates particular goals, levels of productivity required, or quality standards to achieve, for example, it is critical that every employee who achieves the goal receive the rewards. In the same vein, it makes sense for employers to openly share information about the cost of benefits. Benefits are costly, especially if a company provides a wide range of unique benefits, but most employees dont realize this. Your average employee has no idea about the percentage his compensation is increased by the value of his benefits. If an employer is clear about how much the company is investing to make its employees happier and healthier, those employees will have more appreciation for the benefits offered. Ask Questions, Make Changes One of the most difficult challenges for HR departments- especially as they start to add new and unique benefits- is having an open line of communication with employees. Explaining benefits well is only half the battle. Companies should also consistently survey their employees(quarterly is recommended)to understand their benefits satisfaction. If a company realizes that a particular benefit isnt working or isnt valuable to employees, they should announce the benefits changes they will make to address the dissatisfaction. Employees will see that the company cares about their feedback. Bottom Line Flexibility Engagement A Happier Work Environment It is impossible to develop one single benefits solution that will take care of every employee, especially if you consider the diversity of locations, family, health, financial, and travel needs. Employees do, however, need to understand the value of the personalized benefit program that you offer to them to value you as an employer. A modern, cutting-edge rewards experience can help position your employers brand as an industry leader. It will allow your employees to understand and enjoy their benefits package and variable pay opportunities to their fullest degree- and you will reap the reward of satisfied employees.

How to improve productivity and build positive relationships
How to improve productivity and build positive relationshipsHow to improve productivity and build positive relationshipsWerent expecting a piece combining productivity AND having that correlate with the importance of relationship-building, were you? Heres the thing - the two go hand-in-hand. Allow me to explain Every great stride in productivity, performance and planning comes from what we learn and put into action from others. None of us are given all the answers. We have to figure that out. We do so from teachers, mentors, coaches and partners.A fascinating analysis from Harvard Business Review details Dr. methylendioxymethylamphetamin Seppalas findings in studying workplace happiness and productivity. She writesA positive work climate also leads to a positive workplace culture which, again, boosts commitment, engagement, and performance. Happier employees make for not only a more congenial workplace but for improved customer service. As a consequence, a happy and caring culture a t work not only improves employee well-being and productivity but also improved client health outcomes and satisfaction. This happiness she speaks of comes directly from empathy, values and a willingness of leaders to build positive relationships. We can take this model and apply it to our personal lives, relationships and in entrepreneurship. Kindness, Respect, Positive Attitude all lead to building lasting relationships with others. This mindset attracts like-minded people to help us become more successful. Its also a winning strategy for boosting your productivity. So many of us wander around looking for the magic elixir or formula for how to become more productive. There are no secrets and certainly no shortcuts. It begins with discipline, confidence and a strong competitive desire - with yourself - to continue refining, building and progressing toward your peak potential.Once youve done the self-mastery and moved closer toward your own self-actualization, you need to reflect an d look upon the ways others have helped you to grow in the process. Its a reciprocal relationship of continuing to take the inputs of others to keep building yourself. Then, doing the saatkorn for others and picking someone else up.Ive highlighted four important principles to consider and reflect on as you look at yourself, your impact and how you want to impact the world around you. Your productivity will run directly proportional to your ability to build positive relationships with those around you, but also through encouragement and enrichment for yourself.1. Were able to produce and do more than we thinkThe saying mind over matter is real. Our willpower is so strong, yet we only get to know and realize this once we begin to tap into it. Our ability to overcome pain, loss, disadvantages and adversity is largely controlled in the power of our minds But remember this - the other side of this coin is thinking you can do too much, in too short of a period of time. This great Bill Gat es quote exemplifies thisMost people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years. In other words, while we are strong beyond measure, we often umstand into a trap of overestimating our short-term plans and underestimating the long game. This is why I believe so strongly in the power of a five-year plan. Once you put things in writing and commit to a realistic plan, you can truly do anything within reason of your talents and natural abilities.Youre only ever limited by your attitude and your work ethic. If youre willing to stay positive and work hard, you will always produce more than you ever thought possible. And through this ethos, youll attract more people who will help you continue building toward your biggest goals.2. Time is your most valuable commodityMy favorite things in life dont cost any money. Its really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time. - Steve JobsWell, there you go I can tell you. Your friends and c olleagues can tell you. And heck, one of the greatest innovators ever can tell you. But youll only truly understand this truth through your experience. Ive personally found the best way to learn just how valuable time really is, is to strike things out on your own in an endeavor where you are dependent solely on yourself for success.I believe everyone should become their own boss at some point in their life. If nothing else, it causes you to become resourceful and take ownership like you never have before. Once you are doing this for something you believe in and have passion for, youre on a road toward success and fulfillment. And as you keep traveling, youll find just how much you value you time. Because you are both the manager and delivery specialist for your time.Ask any entrepreneur and theyll tell you - My time is valuable. Once you go through a similar experience, you know why, too. You come to value your time for your personal ambitions, your time with family, business time and even volunteer time in a totally different way. This engenders a call to action to be more competitive with yourself, so youll become the person you can be.3. Youll never have it all figured out - thats OKDespite many a successful persons efforts to gain influence and control over every part of their life, it will never happen. Never. And you know what? Thats actually a great thing. You have to seek to influence that which you can, just know its not possible to influence everything. As a result, you wont figure out the answer to everything. Those of us with dominant personalities fight this battle each day. Eventually, you have to let go. Faith needs to enter the equation. Faith in yourself, faith in others, faith in God - faith that things will work out in harmony with your life. Faith is one of the most fundamental values to living a life you can be proud of. Speaking of values4. Values structure will sustain you through lifeWhen your values are clear to you, making decisio ns becomes easier. - Roy E. DisneyRelationships. Goals. Determining your Why and personal definition of success. These things provide structure for your life Building relationships begins local with family, friends and co-workers. In this digital-age, it expands to social media and professional networking sites. Powerful, loving, mutually beneficial relationships help give your life meaning and purpose.Goals provide you with something to reach for and work to attain. Most successful people Ive observed and studied succeed by setting small, incremental goals. Those goals can then fit into the context of a long-term plan, if you choose the five-year plan route above. Either way, having something to aim for is a winning strategy.Values are what give your life definition and serve as the foundation for every move you make. I believe so passionately in the power of values, I wrote a book on the topic. I realized that we all need a framework of reference that helps with making decisions, finding opportunities and building great relationships.Values are the key to beginning on the path that you want to take. Find that structure you crave. Find your values and know they lead to the truth. Once you know your true path, its so much easier to be productive and to attract the people you want to share your journey with.Thisarticlefirst appeared on Medium.

How a media boss turns their to-do list into a power move
How a media boss turns their to-do list into a power moveHow a media boss turns their to-do list into a power moveThe to-do list has turned into a small industry, with special notebooks (see the Weekly Action Pad) and experts and apps. People have a love-hate relationship with to-do lists theyre either enemies of productivity or old stalwarts for getting things done but Kate Lewis, the Chief Content Officer of Hearst Magazines, takes a different, more freewheeling approach to her list.As she tells The Cut, she writes a detailed to-do list weekly, in eight-point font. Its a tremendously overwhelming thing.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAnd then? Then I throw it out. I figure whatever I can remember from what Ive written down is what I really have to do, and everything else is kind of bullshit. Its so good. For so long I had notebooks and downloaded to-do list apps, and as soon as I wrote everything in there, I was mad. So I was like, okay, Im going to try a new approach, and this has been very effective for me. If you fall off the list, sorrySounds like the go-with-the-flow approach is a great way for fending off resentment for the pile of work thats waiting for you and its not like youre going to forget about that big meeting or lunch anyway. And who really needs another to-do app or to learn how to execute another new font of to-do listing anyway? Toss out your notebooks, everyone and dont be offended if youre the one that gets dropped off an agenda or two
